SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers from the two-episode series premiere of “Dutton Ranch,” “The Untold Want” and “Earn Another Day,” which are now streaming on Paramount+.

Exciting news for “Yellowstone” enthusiasts! Since the show concluded in 2024, its absence has been felt. While “Marshals” has filled some of the gap, its procedural nature differs from the Western drama flair that “Dutton Ranch” promises to continue. The series sees Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser reprise their iconic roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, both of whom were standout stars in “Yellowstone.”

As “Yellowstone” ended, Beth, Rip, and their adoptive son Carter (played by Finn Little) relocated to a smaller ranch near Dillon, Montana, aiming to live away from the burdens of the Dutton legacy. However, in “Dutton Ranch,” their new home is quickly destroyed by fire, forcing them to move to the fictional town of Rio Paloma six months afterward. The drama intensifies with a stellar cast that includes Ed Harris and Annette Bening. Let’s delve into the premiere’s two episodes, filled with intriguing moments and pressing questions.

Episode 1: “The Untold Want”

  • Beth sports a fresh new riding outfit, while Rip maintains his traditional style.
  • The visual beauty of the “Yellowstone”-verse is mesmerizing, thanks to director Christina Alexandra Voros.
  • “I’m never going to let this go.” A risky statement for a Dutton!
  • The fire erupted rapidly, becoming uncontrollable.
  • Carter is maturing quickly; puberty has certainly made its mark!
  • The music score pays homage to “Yellowstone” and sounds fantastic.
  • Rip’s heroic moment comes when he saves a calf. Heartwarming!
  • The narrative employs a time jump, enhancing storytelling efficiency.
  • Rob-Will, played by Jai Courtney, emerges as a villain from the start.
  • Rob-Will’s murder of Wes over fraudulent tally books seems extreme.
  • Rob-Will’s confrontation with Wes reveals emotional baggage.
  • Rob-Will’s cocaine use signals his downward spiral.
  • Why is Chet so willing to assist Rob-Will in his misdeeds?
  • Welcome, Beulah Jackson (Bening), with your fabulous wardrobe!
  • Rob-Will is Beulah’s son, and she steps into the John Dutton role.
  • Azul is a delightful character; he’s very likable.
  • Carter’s high school flirtations are less interesting than the adult plot.
  • Rob-Will’s treatment of Azul is unkind.
  • Courtney’s portrayal of Rob-Will makes him thoroughly detestable.
  • Rip’s punch is immensely satisfying to watch.
  • Scenes where Beth doesn’t get her way, especially with Beulah, are entertaining.
  • For “Real Housewives” fans, Carol the bartender is played by Morgan Wade, known as Kyle Richards’ friend.
  • Could Everett McKinney, played by Ed Harris, be an older version of Beth? It’s a possibility!
  • Beth shows growth by not shooting the horse.
  • Rip’s declaration, “I don’t like racist assholes,” marks a notable stance.
  • It’s disappointing when Carter is used just to get beer.
  • Beth’s intuition was right; saving the horse was the correct decision.
  • Carter’s aggressive defense of himself might not bode well in Texas.
  • Beth reflects on her father, lamenting his trivial death on TV.
  • Oreana, played by Natalie Alyn Lind, appears as a potential love interest for Carter.
  • It’s refreshing to see Beth and Rip share an intimate moment again.
  • Joaquin has his hands full managing Rob-Will’s messes.
  • How does Beulah’s family dispose of bodies? Do they have their own secret method?
  • Rob-Will’s choice of a burial site is quite careless.

Episode 2: “Earn Another Day”

  • Rip should never hide murder secrets from Beth; she’ll uncover them.
  • It’s troublesome when a poorly buried body reappears.
  • “God loves cowboys.” Is this available as a cross-stitch on Etsy?
  • Whitney appears determined to resolve Wes’ disappearance. Let’s hope she stays safe!
  • The Dwight Yoakam music drop was a nice touch, though more country music would be welcome.
  • Oreana seems problematic; her age and actions with beer at high school are concerning.
  • Chet’s choice of a branding iron in a fight seems foolish.
  • The displayed meat looks delicious. Maybe order some steaks?
  • Beulah displays a chilling demeanor.
  • Fun trivia: Zachariah, played by Marc Menchaca, is married to Lena Headey!
  • Oreana’s relationship status is disappointing for Carter.
  • The show’s use of Spanish adds authenticity, which is commendable.
  • Oreana’s family ties are surprising; she’s Beulah’s granddaughter and Rob-Will’s daughter!
  • Despite Carter’s recent adventures, including jail, Rip and Beth remain unaware.
  • Everett is endearing as a friendly, singing cowboy vet. Let’s keep him around!
  • Zachariah’s impressive mustache deserves respect.
  • The question remains: what’s in the freezer?
  • It’s grim to discover Wes’ body there.

Until next week, “Dutton Ranch” fans! Catch a glimpse of what lies ahead this season in the trailer below.
