A man accused of being intoxicated and drag racing at 102 mph before crashing into another vehicle and killing its driver in June 2023 has been ordered to pay $21 million to the victim’s family, court records reveal.
Marvin Bonilla, 28, reportedly had a blood alcohol content of .13 when he drove his Ford Mustang at high speed on June 23, 2023, as stated in a Chicago police crash report. At the intersection of 59th Street and Pulaski Road, he allegedly collided with a Toyota RAV4 driven by 51-year-old Alberto Onofre.
An officer noted in the report, “The crash nearly split the Toyota into two.”
After initially fleeing the scene, Bonilla called 911 three times seeking assistance, the report states. He was subsequently taken to Christ Hospital for medical treatment.
DNA evidence recovered by investigators allegedly confirmed Bonilla as the driver of the Mustang at the time of the crash. He turned himself in to police in April 2025 after being informed that investigators were looking for him in connection to the incident. He is currently facing trial on charges of reckless homicide among others.
Six months following the crash and over a year before any criminal charges were laid, Onofre’s family initiated a wrongful death lawsuit against Bonilla. Cook County Judge Michael Otto later ruled that Bonilla must pay $21 million to Onofre’s wife and three children, allocating $10 million to the wife and about $3.67 million to each child, according to court documents.
Bonilla is due back in court for the criminal proceedings on June 30.
