Healthcare CEO wasn’t afraid to change how he pursued his dream

Until July 4, The Post, in collaboration with the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream, is highlighting stories from US citizens about the meaning of the American dream in 2026. One such story features David Dill, CEO of the Tennessee-based LifePoint Health, which manages over 300 hospitals and medical centers nationwide.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, my father was a basketball coach and a significant source of inspiration for me. During my seventh or eighth grade year, he sat me down for a candid talk. He said, “Son, you’re going to be a decent high school basketball player, but you probably won’t get much playing time. You’re likely to spend a lot of time on the bench.”

That conversation was tough, but my dad was being honest. Later, I attended Murray State University in Kentucky, where he coached basketball. With my dream of playing basketball gone, I aspired to follow in his footsteps as a coach. However, my dad advised against it, offering wisdom I didn’t fully grasp at the time.

He suggested, “Son, choose a career where you work alongside professionals, not kids fresh out of their homes, to determine your success.”

His indirect message was clear: “Avoid my path and pursue something different. Collaborate with professionals who excel in their fields, and you can achieve remarkable things.”

That advice led me to shift my focus from sports to other opportunities. Even after my father passed away a few years back, I would call him almost every night on my way home from work. I’d remind him that he never discouraged me from coaching. I still coach, but instead of a sports court, it’s in the business world.
