A Dunedin man, who was tasered by police, was also pepper-sprayed after allegedly causing a disturbance while receiving medical attention for the tasering.

Acting Senior Sergeant Iain Notman, from Dunedin, reported that police were summoned to a residence in Brockville around 4pm yesterday.

Initial reports indicated that the man was allegedly involved in assaulting a woman and pursuing her with a knife.

Upon arrival, officers encountered a 51-year-old man, known to police, positioned at the top of the driveway.

When officers informed the man of his arrest, he disregarded the notification.

According to Acting Snr Sgt Notman, the man “continued to aggressively approach police with his fists clenched,” leading to his being tasered.

During a subsequent search, officers discovered a knife on the man.

He was immediately given “appropriate post-taser care” and medical treatment and did not suffer any injuries from the tasering.

However, while receiving medical care at Dunedin Hospital, the man remained “aggressive and agitated.”

He allegedly attempted to leave the hospital despite being under arrest.

As a result, he was pepper-sprayed, Acting Snr Sgt Notman stated.

The man was taken into police custody and was set to appear in the Dunedin District Court today.

He faces charges of contravening a protection order, injuring with intent to injure, male assaults female, possession of an offensive weapon, and trespass, as stated by Acting Snr Sgt Notman.
