The globally acclaimed Webtoon webcomic “Lumine” is set to come to life as an animated series. Webtoon Productions, the U.S.-based studio and IP branch of Webtoon Entertainment, has partnered with French animation studio OuiDo! Productions to create an animated adaptation of the popular webcomic, which has garnered over 550 million views on Webtoon’s platform.

Last November, Webtoon Entertainment made headlines by securing a deal with Warner Bros Animation to jointly produce adaptations of 10 beloved Webtoon webcomic series for global audiences.

The collaboration with OuiDo! highlights Webtoon’s ongoing expansion of its international portfolio of animated and anime-inspired adaptations beyond the Warner Bros agreement, with a focus on its most popular series.

A standout example is the fantasy friendship story “Lumine” by author Emma Krogell, which was published on Webtoon from 2017 to 2024, with a break in between. This adaptation will be showcased at this week’s Annecy Festival Mifa market in France, held from June 23-26.

According to a logline released by Webtoon Productions and OuiDo! on Monday, the animated series will once again be set in a world where weredogs, witches, and humans coexist.

The story follows Lumine, an unfortunate weredog with no place to turn, who meets Kody, an antisocial witch boy. One character causes trouble wherever he goes, while the other seems to attract it, the logline explains.

Unbeknownst to him, Lumine has stumbled into a family with its own secrets. Kody is haunted by shadows, and his reasons for hiring Lumine are not as straightforward as they appear. The situation is far more perilous than Lumine expected, marking just the beginning of their adventure, the logline concludes.

A key art image shared with Variety captures the character design from the early webcomic, depicting Lumine and Kody along with a white-furred werewolf defending two children from another werewolf’s attack. The scene is set amidst woodland, a gothic mansion, and two skyscrapers looming in the distance.

Bryan Q. Miller, known for “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” and “Smallville,” will be the showrunner and co-writer for the adaptation. He will collaborate with Sandrine Nguyen, CEO of OuiDo! Productions, and her creative team in Paris.

The executive producers for the adaptation include Webtoon Productions President David Madden, Head of Global Animation Sydney Bright, along with OuiDo!’s Nguyen and President Boris Hertzog.

“‘Lumine’ is exactly the kind of project we love to champion at OuiDo!: a beloved world, memorable characters, and a story with true emotional resonance,” stated Sandrine Nguyen, CEO of OuiDo! Productions.

“We are thrilled to partner with Webtoon Productions, whose deep understanding of creator-led franchises and global fan communities is invaluable,” she added. “Bryan Q. Miller’s involvement is another great asset, given his exceptional experience in crafting compelling character journeys. Together, we are eager to bring Emma Krogell’s extraordinary world to animation for audiences worldwide.”

“Webtoon has revolutionized visual storytelling, presenting us with a tremendous opportunity to transform these fantastic stories into new animated TV and film projects,” said David Madden, President of Webtoon Productions.

“Fans around the world have fallen in love with Lumine due to its endearing characters, heartfelt friendships, and unique mix of fantasy, humor, and mystery. At its heart, it’s a story about belonging and found family set in a visually imaginative world, making it especially exciting to bring to animation alongside OuiDo!, who excels in developing animated entertainment from major IPs.”

The “Lumine” webcomic has been translated into French, Spanish, German, and both traditional and simplified Chinese. It has also been published in four graphic novel volumes by Penguin Random House and Webtoon Unscrolled.

The announcement of this adaptation follows the January approval of Webtoon Productions’ animated series adaptation of “Lore Olympus” with Prime Video and The Jim Henson Company. Other Webtoon webcomic hits being adapted include “Apocalyptic Horseplay” by “Workaholics” co-creator Dominic Russo, “Gosu” with Toei Animation and Studio Mir, and “Eleceed” with DandeLion Animation Studio.

Founded in 2003 by Nguyen and Hertzog, OuiDo! Productions has produced “Magicampers” for Disney Jr., co-produced “Alvinnn!!! and The Chipmunks” with Bagdasarian Productions, and created “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse+” for Disney Jr.

After reacquiring OuiDo! from Technicolor Animation Productions in 2025, Nguyen and Hertzog have transformed it into a comprehensive media group covering all aspects of production, distribution, and licensing. They have also launched a dedicated studio for teen and adult animation, with the “Lumine” adaptation serving as a flagship initiative in this endeavor.
