WASHINGTON — Senate Democrats are initiating an investigation into the Trump administration’s restructuring of federal vaccine policy, requesting that officials provide records by the following week.
In correspondence addressed to health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., which was seen by STAT, Senate Finance Committee Democrats Ron Wyden (Ore.) and Maggie Hassan (N.H.) criticized the alterations Kennedy has implemented in federal vaccine policy. Their focus is on the reconfiguration of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. Last year, Kennedy dismissed all former members of ACIP and replaced them with allies skeptical of vaccines.
The Democrats have asked for documents, including message records, that could reveal who was involved in and approved the decision to reorganize ACIP, the risks considered before enacting the change, and the vetting process for selecting new committee members. They stated their intention to “assess the legality, decision-making process, and public health consequences” of the committee’s changes.
