The textile and clothing industry in Europe is currently facing a pivotal moment, with rising costs, increased global competition, and the challenge of transitioning to sustainability and digitalization. Mario Jorge Machado, a graduate in Production Polymer Engineering from the University of Minho, was re-elected as the president of EURATEX in June 2024.
For his new term, Machado has outlined three main goals to drive the industry forward. Firstly, he emphasized the importance of competitiveness as the foundation of industrial policy, essential for investment, innovation, sustainability, and strategic autonomy. He plans to implement measures to enhance the business environment for textile companies, including support for automation, digitalization, artificial intelligence, skills development, and innovation, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Secondly, Machado highlighted the need for a level playing field, advocating for uniform rules for all products sold in the EU, not just those manufactured within the bloc. He stressed the importance of stronger market surveillance, stricter border checks, and more effective monitoring of imports sold through online platforms to ensure compliance with EU safety, environmental, and consumer requirements.
Lastly, managing the transition towards green and digital practices without weakening European industry is another key priority for Machado. He believes that sustainability should enhance competitiveness and called for realistic regulations, affordable energy, practical implementation, and targeted support to help companies adapt. Machado also proposed measures to stimulate demand for sustainable European-made textiles through public procurement and transparent tools.
In a statement, Machado expressed his commitment to strengthening the industry’s competitiveness, ensuring fair play for all products in Europe, and supporting companies through the green and digital transition. He emphasized the importance of decarbonizing the industry without deindustrializing it.
The General Assembly also announced the members of the EURATEX Presidency Team who will assist Machado in his endeavors. These include Franz Peter Falke from T+M, Germany, Barbara Cimmino from Confindustria Moda, Italy, Ismail Kolunsag from IHKIB, Türkiye, and Grégory Marchand from UIT, France.
