Kalshi launches ‘perps’ for gold and silver following CFTC approval, expanding futures offerings
SHARE

Kalshi, a trading platform known for its prediction markets, has recently expanded its offerings by gaining approval to list perpetual futures tied to precious metals gold and silver in the United States. This development comes after the Commodity Futures Trading Commission approved the listing of these perpetuals, which were originally filed in July. The new markets for these contracts officially launched on Thursday on the Kalshi website.

This expansion into precious metals follows Kalshi’s previous approval to list perpetual futures tied to cryptocurrencies back in late May. Since then, the cryptocurrency contracts have seen significant notional volume, totaling $44 billion according to the platform’s website. Udesh Jha, the chief risk officer at Kalshi Klear, the exchange’s clearing house, explained that the decision to offer perpetual futures for precious metals was driven by high demand for these commodities, particularly gold and silver, due to concerns about inflation.

Kalshi has already seen success in commodity-related event contracts, including metals and oil, with trading volume surpassing $400 million in just seven months. This milestone was achieved in half the time it took for the crypto event contracts to reach the same level of trading volume. Perpetual futures, also known as “perps,” are unique in that they do not have an expiration date and do not require investors to own the underlying asset. Instead, these contracts track the price of the asset with a funding mechanism to ensure alignment with the market price.

In addition to offering perps on precious metals, Kalshi is also seeking approval for contracts tied to U.S. equities, industrial metal copper, and currencies in August. This approval for precious metals marks the first non-crypto related contract to be approved by the CFTC. The launch of perps by Kalshi has caused concern among traditional futures exchanges like CBOE and CME Group, as they fear that this new futures type could disrupt their existing business models. In fact, CME has even taken legal action by suing the CFTC to block the approval of perps in the U.S., citing concerns about the agency’s decision-making process.

Despite the backlash from traditional exchanges, Udesh Jha attributes the early success of Kalshi’s perps offerings to the platform’s regulated nature. He emphasized the importance of operating in a regulated environment with proper risk controls, stating that unregulated platforms often face limitations in their growth potential. It is clear that Kalshi’s commitment to regulatory compliance has set it apart in the trading space, allowing it to innovate and expand its offerings in a responsible manner.

In conclusion, Kalshi’s foray into offering perpetual futures tied to precious metals represents a significant milestone for the platform as it continues to diversify its trading options beyond prediction markets. The success of these new offerings serves as a testament to the company’s commitment to providing innovative and regulated trading products to its customers.
