A former Maryland teacher, Melissa Marie Curtis, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for engaging in sexual acts with a 14-year-old student while she was a teacher at Montgomery Village Middle School in 2015. However, she will only serve one year behind bars for the crime, with the rest of the sentence suspended.

The 32-year-old teacher had sexual intercourse with the minor more than 20 times between January and May 2015, with the illicit trysts taking place in various locations including the school, her car, and several residences, including her mother’s home in Montgomery County. Curtis also provided the eighth-grader with alcohol and marijuana, according to the Montgomery County Police Department.

The victim, who volunteered for an after-school program led by Curtis, came forward with the abuse allegations in October 2023, prompting a police investigation. Curtis, who had been a teacher for approximately two years and had also taught at Lakelands Park Middle School, turned herself in to police on November 7, 2023, and was charged with sexual abuse of a minor and multiple counts of third- and fourth-degree sexual offenses.

In June, Curtis pleaded guilty to three counts of third-degree sex offenses. As part of her sentence, she is required to register as a sex offender for 25 years and will be prohibited from having any unsupervised contact with minors other than her own children. The judge also imposed a five-year probation period on her.

This disturbing case highlights the importance of protecting students from predatory behavior by those in positions of authority. It serves as a reminder of the consequences of such actions and the need for strict consequences for those who violate the trust placed in them as educators.
