Several prospective candidates for the 2028 presidential election have already made appearances at World Cup matches:
- Shapiro: 2 matches
- Newsom: 1 match
- Harris: 1 match
- Rubio: 1 match
One Democratic strategist indicates that this strategy might be quite effective.
Matt Bennett, affiliated with the center-left think tank Third Way, advised POLITICO that more possible 2028 candidates should consider taking part in the World Cup festivities.
“The World Cup offers excitement and inspiration, featuring heroic moments, touching stories, and determined underdogs. The US team is performing impressively, while Trump is not paying attention,” Bennett remarked. “Democrats should fully embrace this – attend games, join fans in bars to watch, celebrate our team’s achievements, and mingle with the Scots. It’s a chance to show that we’re relatable, patriotic, and enjoy good fun.”
