A chaotic scene unfolded in South Carolina as a group of teenagers assaulted two police officers during a tumultuous Fourth of July celebration, according to police reports. The officers were trying to disperse a dangerous gathering that involved gunfire and fireworks aimed at vehicles.
The incident occurred as officers sought to shut down an Independence Day event in the Chicora-Cherokee area of North Charleston around 8:30 p.m., according to the North Charleston Police Department.
“We need some help,” North Charleston Police Chief Ron Camacho appealed to the public. “We really do. We need some help from the community. Because stuff like this is getting dangerous.”
Authorities noted that the city had initially permitted the celebration, coordinating with party organizers earlier in the day to establish parking and traffic plans.
However, the festivities took a perilous turn after dark, with reports of gunfire and partygoers recklessly firing fireworks at passing cars, officials said.
Police attempted to disperse the crowd, but their efforts were largely ignored as altercations erupted and gunshots were fired.
The situation escalated into violence when officers exited their vehicles to intervene in the fighting, only to be attacked by attendees, authorities reported.
According to police, several officers were assaulted during the chaos, including two who were brutally knocked to the ground by a group of teenagers, as captured in video footage obtained by WSCS.
The video shows a police officer struggling with a young person who shoves her to the ground, while another individual punches the officer and a third strikes her with a stick.
Another officer intervened to assist his colleague, pulling the unruly youth away, but was then attacked by other teenagers. The officer deployed a taser to disperse the surrounding crowd, as shown in the video.
Police reported that four individuals, three of whom were juveniles, and one adult, were arrested at the scene.
Officers also recovered four firearms, including two automatic weapons, and a homemade spear from the scene.
During a press conference on Sunday, Chief Camacho condemned the behavior of the adolescents, describing it as “the most difficult thing that I’ve had to deal with in my policing career.”
Camacho urged the community to cooperate with law enforcement and help manage the unruly youths.
