ESPN has made a surprising new hire for their upcoming Christmas Day broadcast – Daisy Duck. The beloved animated character, who has been a part of the Disney family for over 80 years, will be stepping into a new role as a sideline reporter for an animated version of an NBA game between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2, Disney+, and ESPN+ in an effort to attract a younger audience to sports programming.

The game will take place in a unique setting, resembling Disney’s Magic Kingdom theme park’s Main Street USA. As the teams play, iconic Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto, and Chip and Dale will be in attendance, cheering on the players. Every move made by the players will be captured in real-time, creating an immersive experience for viewers.

In addition to the game itself, there will be special halftime entertainment featuring a slam dunk contest with the Disney characters. Santa’s Elves will operate the cameras, and the characters will deliver motivational speeches to the players. Daisy Duck will be joined by ESPN commentators Drew Carter and Monica McNutt, who will be animated in the style of the telecast and wear virtual reality headgear to watch the game as viewers do.

This innovative broadcast is part of ESPN’s ongoing efforts to create engaging sports formats tailored to younger audiences. By incorporating beloved animated characters into live sports events, ESPN aims to attract new viewers and increase engagement with their programming. This Christmas Day NBA game will be the first of its kind, marking a new milestone in sports broadcasting.

In recent years, ESPN has experimented with various concepts to appeal to younger viewers, including animated NFL games featuring characters from “The Simpsons” and NHL matchups with characters from “Big City Greens.” These initiatives have been well-received, paving the way for more creative collaborations between sports and animation.

The upcoming animated NBA game on Christmas Day will not only be a groundbreaking event but will also be the first NBA game to stream on Disney+. This partnership between Disney and ESPN showcases the power of collaboration between entertainment and sports media, creating innovative and engaging content for audiences of all ages.
