SANFORD, Maine — On Sunday, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows announced the end of her Senate campaign, paving the way for Troy Jackson to strengthen his position in the rapidly progressing Democratic nomination race.

“This nominating process has been unlike any other, compressed into days rather than months. I’m deeply thankful to every volunteer who tirelessly dedicated their time to this movement,” Bellows expressed in a statement. “The enthusiasm we’ve seen is crucial for defeating Susan Collins this November, and Democrats must unite quickly to achieve this common objective.”

Bellows was the leading female contender in a swift race that emerged over the past week after Graham Platner withdrew his candidacy. His departure followed a POLITICO report alleging that a former partner accused him of sexual assault, which he has denied.

In response, Maine Democrats initiated an expedited nominating process, with county parties selecting delegates for a convention scheduled for next weekend. It soon became apparent that Jackson, a former Maine Senate president with ties to organized labor and national progressives, was leading the race. On the first day of delegate selections, Jackson’s volunteer team overwhelmingly secured most of the available positions.

The Democratic nomination holds significant importance, as Collins is one of the most susceptible Republican senators facing reelection in November. However, her long-standing reputation as a resilient campaigner in predominantly Democratic Maine, combined with the controversy surrounding Platner, could impact the general election.

Bellows was among several Democrats, including Jackson, who initially pursued the governor’s seat this year but lost in the primary. They then entered the Senate race following Platner’s exit. Bellows’s performance during the recent Senate primary debate and her inability to distinguish herself in a crowded field contributed to her decision to end her campaign.
