Where are Americans saving the most — and least?

Retirement savings are a key concern for many Americans as they plan for their golden years. It’s no secret that where you live can have a significant impact on how much you need to save for retirement. The latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau sheds light on which states are the most — and least — prepared for retirement.

When comparing retirement savings by state, it’s important to note that the data is based on median savings. This means that it represents the midpoint, with half of households having more saved and half having less. This provides a more realistic picture of what a typical household in a state has accumulated, as opposed to an average that can be skewed by a small number of households with multimillion-dollar accounts.

Factors such as the cost of living play a major role in determining how much you need to save for retirement. States like California, Hawaii, and New York, known for their high costs of living, may require a larger nest egg to maintain your desired lifestyle in retirement. Higher housing, grocery, utility, healthcare, and transportation costs can all contribute to the amount of income you’ll need in retirement.

On the flip side, higher wages in more expensive states can provide workers with more money to contribute to their retirement accounts. For example, California has one of the highest costs of living in the country but also boasts high average hourly earnings. However, higher pay doesn’t always fully offset a higher cost of living, so it’s essential to consider all expenses when planning for retirement.

Taxes are another important factor to consider when determining how much you can save for retirement. The more you earn, the more of your income is taxed, and state income tax rates can vary significantly. Additionally, how states treat withdrawals from retirement accounts, pensions, and Social Security benefits can impact your overall savings.

When looking at states with the most retirement savings, Maryland, New Jersey, Washington, Hawaii, and Massachusetts top the list. These states have higher median retirement savings balances, but they also have higher costs of living and top marginal tax rates to consider.

Conversely, states with the least retirement savings include Louisiana, New Mexico, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Mississippi. While these states may have lower median retirement savings balances, they also have lower costs of living and top marginal tax rates, which can impact how much residents need to save for retirement.

Ultimately, when determining how much you need to save for retirement, it’s essential to consider your desired lifestyle, streams of income, retirement timeline, and all potential expenses. By carefully planning and adjusting your retirement savings goals as needed, you can work towards a financially secure retirement.
