Can a Private Company Outshine Canada’s Economy?
The notion that a private enterprise could hold a valuation eclipsing that of an entire nation’s economy is a tantalizing thought for many. Periodically, a high-flying tech company achieves a staggering market cap, leading to eyebrow-raising comparisons with the GDP of various countries.
Take, for instance, NVIDIA, whose market capitalization exceeded Canada’s GDP by 2025. By May 2026, this chip manufacturing giant wasvalued higher than the annual GDP of every nation except the United States and China.
Yet, such comparisons often lack substance; they evoke more of an emotional response than analytical insight. The core issue lies in the fact that these two figures are expressed in different terms, making them fundamentally incompatible.
In scientific circles, discussions about measurement units are a favorite pastime. For example, one cannot equate the temperature on a particular day with the change in temperature over time. Economists, when faced with similar comparisons, typically emphasize the difference between stocks and flows.
To illustrate this, textbooks frequently reference taps and bathtubs. A stock denotes a quantity measured at a specific moment—like the water level in a bathtub—while a flow represents a measurement over time, such as the liters per minute flowing from a tap. Despite their interrelationship, these two concepts operate with distinct units and cannot be directly juxtaposed.
In this context, market capitalization represents a stock. NVIDIA’s approximate $5 trillion valuation in mid-June 2026 reflects the anticipated profits it will generate until it ceases trading.
Conversely, GDP is categorized as a flow. Canada’s nominal GDP of about 3.25 trillion Canadian dollars in 2025 (around 2.4 trillion US dollars) quantifies the total value of all final goods and services produced within the country over a single year. To compare these figures is akin to measuring an individual’s income against the worth of their home.
So, if we wish to extract meaningful insights from these numbers, we need to align our comparisons. This involves conceptualizing Canada’s entire economic activity as a single entity, let’s call it Canada Inc., and imagining this entity being offered to investors through an initial public offering (IPO).
Such an IPO would yield a singular figure for Canada Inc. today, capitalizing on the future profits it is expected to generate. Therefore, to determine whether a company surpasses Canada’s worth, we must estimate what Canada would be valued at in such a scenario.
The Gordon growth model serves as a standard tool for valuing a company’s shares based on its dividends. This model posits that a flow growing at a consistent rate, discounted at a stable rate, has a present value given by:
Flotation value = Output next year / (Discount rate − Growth rate)
The natural discount rate to consider is the long-term Government of Canada yield, which was about 3.8 percent in June 2026. However, as economist Olivier Blanchard has noted, safe rates in advanced economies often fall below growth rates, making such a low discount rate impractical for valuing an entire economy. Thus, we opted to price the economy’s output as equity, applying a risk premium above government bonds. Even under a stringent 8% discount rate—indicating a higher risk level for Canadian output compared to most corporate equities—Canada would still be valued at twenty-three times its annual GDP. At a more lenient 6%, the valuation jumps to forty-one times, equating to 159 trillion CAD (about 112 trillion USD). In contrast, NVIDIA, a titan in corporate history, stands at about $5 trillion. Hence, in a head-to-head market valuation, this tech behemoth falls short of the Canadian economy.
One critique of this rudimentary valuation is that it typically focuses on profits rather than revenues, and GDP is more akin to a revenue figure—representing the total output before settling wages, paying suppliers, or replacing depreciated assets.
If accountants and financial analysts were genuinely conducting an IPO for Canada Inc., they would likely focus on capitalizing the residual profits that an owner could realistically pocket, resulting in a lower figure. Nonetheless, that figure would still be expected to reach into the tens of trillions at the very least.
In conclusion, no private company on the planet is valued higher than the net present value of the Canadian economy. The broader takeaway, however, is the futility of comparing stocks to flows.
