In a solemn ceremony held in the Capitol Rotunda, Republican senators, both current and former, gathered to honor the late Sen. Lindsey Graham. The event, marked by a flag-draped coffin, highlighted Graham’s significant impact, stretching from his South Carolina roots to global affairs.

The ceremony, the first of two days dedicated to remembering Graham, who passed away at 71 earlier this month, featured heartfelt tributes from influential party members. They shared personal anecdotes and celebrated his role as a steadfast friend, a fixture in Congress, and a prominent figure in U.S. foreign policy.

Following the Capitol tribute, Graham’s casket was moved to Washington National Cathedral for a funeral service. Notable attendees included President Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

At the Capitol, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., reflected on Graham’s extensive contributions over three decades in Congress. Thune praised his involvement in judicial confirmations, his passionate defense of Ukraine, and his advocacy for the anti-abortion movement.

Thune remarked that Graham’s passing leaves a void in the Senate, describing him as a “powerful voice” and a convivial presence. “Lindsey Graham was unmatched in his dedication to his role, yet he could effortlessly lighten the mood,” Thune stated, noting Graham’s knack for initiating joint Senate dinners filled with laughter and engaging conversations.

Originating from Central, S.C., Graham grew up in modest circumstances, sharing a single room with his family behind their business. After losing both parents, he took on the responsibility of caring for his sister, Darline Graham, who has been appointed to complete his term.

Vice President J.D. Vance, who served alongside Graham, admired him for his charisma and humor. Vance recounted a spirited debate over Ukraine funding, after which he expected Graham would not support any of his bills. However, Graham’s good-natured and passionate demeanor proved otherwise.

Vance noted, “It was impossible not to like him — his infectious laughter, vibrant personality, and deep passion resonated with everyone.”

Graham prioritized Ukraine, working on a Russia sanctions bill aimed at ending the prolonged conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This legislation remains a key focus for Senate Republican leaders, who scheduled a procedural vote following the Washington services.

New Hampshire Governor Kelly Ayotte, a close Senate colleague, praised Graham’s ability to form personal connections, even with those holding opposing views. As a military veteran, Ayotte emphasized the enduring legacy of Graham’s contributions to the armed forces.

A University of South Carolina law school graduate, Graham served over three decades in the U.S. military, including as an Air Force judge advocate. Ayotte humorously recalled Graham’s frequent reminders of his seniority both in the military and the Senate.

After the National Cathedral service, Graham’s remains will be flown back to South Carolina for a funeral on Wednesday at Columbia’s First Baptist Church.
