Emirates, the world’s largest long-haul international airline, has recently made headlines by announcing that it will now accept cryptocurrency payments for flights. This move, which was launched on July 28, allows customers with a Crypto.com account to pay for tickets directly from their digital wallets. The option is available to eligible UAE residents for bookings priced and settled in Emirati dirham (AED), and transactions are processed in accordance with UAE regulatory standards.
The partnership between Emirates and Crypto.com was signed in July 2025 and has now come to fruition in less than a year, showcasing the rapid pace of innovation in the airline industry. Adnan Kazim, Emirates’ deputy president and chief commercial officer, expressed the company’s commitment to expanding customer choice in payment methods, particularly for the younger, digitally fluent generation who prefer managing their finances and travel plans from their mobile devices.
Eric Anziani, president and chief operating officer of Crypto.com, hailed the deal as a milestone for the company and its Pay feature, attributing the success to the UAE’s forward-thinking approach to innovation. Emirates’ reputation as a premium airline with top-notch services and amenities has made it a popular choice for travelers seeking luxury and comfort. The airline’s fleet of 277 wide-body aircraft serves over 140 destinations worldwide, making it a dominant player in the aviation industry.
In the financial year ending March 31, 2026, Emirates reported a record profit of AED 19.7 billion (approximately $5.4 billion) on revenue of around $41 billion, carrying 53.2 million passengers. The Emirates Group, which includes the airline, achieved its best-ever result with a profit of AED 24.4 billion (about $6.6 billion). The airline’s commitment to excellence is further underscored by its investment in new aircraft, with a pledge of $41.4 billion at the 2025 Dubai Airshow.
The integration of cryptocurrency payments aligns with the UAE’s efforts to position itself as a hub for fintech and digital innovation. Crypto.com’s Dubai entity, granted a Stored Value Facilities license by the Central Bank of the UAE, showcases the regulatory approval required to handle digital payments. This move also supports Dubai’s Cashless Strategy under the D33 economic agenda, which aims to digitize 90% of all transactions by the end of 2026.
Overall, Emirates’ decision to accept cryptocurrency payments reflects its commitment to embracing cutting-edge technology and meeting the evolving needs of its customers. As the airline continues to innovate and adapt to changing trends in the travel industry, it solidifies its position as a leader in luxury air travel.
