The decision by Trump and his party to reduce Affordable Care Act subsidies disrupted healthcare coverage for millions and increased costs for tens of millions more, marking the start of a broader campaign against affordable healthcare.

These subsidy cuts under the Affordable Care Act affected coverage costs for 20 million Americans. Now, Trump is focusing on the 25 million American seniors relying on Medicare prescription drug plans to manage their medication expenses.

The Wall Street Journal reported:

The Trump administration intends to terminate a subsidy program that has been helping to keep premiums for Medicare drug plans lower, potentially resulting in higher rates for seniors’ prescription coverage next year.

This decision will phase out a program currently providing insurance companies with an estimated $3.6 billion in subsidies this year, designed to mitigate premium increases for Medicare prescription plans, known as Part D. The program is set to conclude after 2026, as stated by administration officials.

…

According to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, a federal oversight agency, the subsidy program, intended to stabilize Part D, is projected to decrease the average Part D plan premium by about 40% in 2025. This year, it has lowered the average rate by an estimated 27%.

The administration asserts that choices will remain available and premiums will decline, but this development is not what Republicans want ahead of the midterm elections.
