Beyond her health challenges, Carly Simon has faced significant personal tragedies. Her brother Peter succumbed to lung cancer in 2018 at the age of 71. In a heartbreaking turn, her sisters Joanna, 85, and Lucy, 82, both passed away from cancer just a day apart in October 2022.
The acclaimed singer has been candid about her difficult past, including sexual abuse by a teenage family friend starting at age seven and the emotional distance of her father, Richard L. Simon, whose depression cast a shadow on their family life.
Simon’s personal life has often been in the spotlight. Her marriage to musician James Taylor resulted in two children, daughter Sally, 52, and son Ben, 49. However, their relationship was marred by Taylor’s struggles with addiction, ultimately leading to their separation.
In her marriage to Jim Hart, Simon admitted that jealousy led her to hire a private investigator.
Despite these challenges, Simon remains dedicated to her music, finding solace and purpose in her creative pursuits amid her illness. She expressed, “I am still writing, singing, imagining, laughing, worrying, remembering, and occasionally getting trapped in an overstuffed chair.”
