Amid a surge in shark sightings along the Northeast coast this summer, the New York Police Department (NYPD) has implemented drone technology to monitor city beaches. This initiative aims to provide lifeguards with an aerial perspective to detect sharks before they approach swimmers.

The NYPD’s Technical Assistance Response Unit (TARU) employs drones for various public safety tasks. These include rescuing swimmers in distress, aiding search-and-rescue efforts, overseeing crowded beaches, and tracking sharks offshore.

In collaboration with lifeguards, officers from this specialized, tech-savvy unit patrol the skies over city beaches, offering a preventative aerial defense against these ocean predators.

Upon spotting a shark—a more frequent occurrence this summer—drone operators promptly inform lifeguards, who then clear the water to ensure swimmers’ safety.

The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation reported that 16 sharks were observed between July 1 and July 5 near Rockaway Beach, with NYPD drones identifying seven of these sightings, according to ABC 7.

Although shark attacks in New York are still uncommon, the use of NYPD drone patrols enhances safety by enabling lifeguards to detect sharks before they pose a threat to swimmers.

The Florida Museum of Natural History notes that there were 12 unprovoked shark bites over more than 150 years prior to 2022. However, recent years have witnessed a temporary rise in non-fatal encounters along the waters of Long Island and New York City.

By employing drones as an additional surveillance tool, officials remain committed to prioritizing visitor safety while allowing sharks to live in their natural habitats.
