6 Easy Eco-Actions To Take With Your Kids

Recycling is often the first thought when shifting toward a more sustainable lifestyle, and understandably so. However, there are numerous other ways to embrace eco-friendly habits within your family.

Here are six simple, child-friendly activities that you might not have considered.

1. Transition to an eco-friendly toothbrush

Dentists recommend replacing toothbrushes every three months, so opting for a sustainable option is a sensible choice. Here are a few options to explore.

2. Plan “power down” days

In our gadget-obsessed world, taking a break from technology can be invigorating. A “power down” day involves disconnecting from TVs, computers, phones, and other devices. It offers a chance to slow down and reconnect with family and oneself.

Some summers ago, a five-day storm-induced blackout in my neighborhood unexpectedly turned into an enjoyable experience.

The quiet was refreshing; you don’t notice how much noise appliances make until they stop. Without electronic distractions, my family played board games, read, took long walks, and shared meals with neighbors. We showered by candlelight and went to bed early, serenaded by crickets.

Although we consumed less energy without electricity, we felt more energized afterward. This inspired us to incorporate regular “power down” days into our lives.

3. Let kids wear their favorite clothes

If your child is like mine, they have a few outfits they love to wear repeatedly. And why not? Clothes often end up in the laundry after just one wear, even if they’re still clean. Young kids don’t have body odor, so why waste resources on extra laundry?

Your washer and dryer (and your kids) will appreciate it. Plus, washing less frequently is a great way to extend the lifespan of clothing. Similar to the three-second rule for dropped food, consider a three-day rule for clothes — only wash after three wears. As long as your child has clean underwear, you’re set.

4. Choose ice cream cones over cups

At the store, skip “child-friendly” plastic or Styrofoam cups that contribute to landfill waste. Your child probably prefers the cone anyway! At home, enjoy making homemade ice cream cones.

Apply this idea by purchasing and consuming foods with minimal packaging whenever possible. It means less to clean and less waste in the trash.

5. Turn trash into treasure

The saying goes that children often find more joy in the box than its contents. This rings true for my daughter. Last weekend, Sofie turned a large furniture box into various things, from a slide to a coffin (don’t ask). She has creatively reused cardboard boxes and scraps to build forts, boats, houses, games, and even the Taj Mahal. Toilet paper rolls become doll hampers, and tissue boxes serve as beds.

When packaging becomes a plaything, it reduces landfill waste and sparks creativity in young minds.

6. Support a green cause

Several years ago, I started a family tradition of donating to Heifer International at Christmas. I wanted Sofie to embrace the spirit of giving, not just receiving, during the holidays. She was surprised to learn that some children face food scarcity. Now, she enjoys browsing the Heifer catalog annually to select an animal for a family in need.

Numerous green organizations exist. Here’s a top-five list to help you begin. Use Charity Navigator to check ratings on well-reviewed charities or find one aligned with your child’s interests.
