Michigan state Senator Mallory McMorrow, who exited the Democratic Senate race a month before the primary, has thrown her support behind Abdul El-Sayed. This move comes as El-Sayed holds a slight lead over Representative Haley Stevens early Wednesday morning.

“I am proud to offer Abdul my full endorsement and support as we move towards November as a unified party,” McMorrow stated.

At the time of McMorrow’s endorsement, El-Sayed was ahead of Stevens by approximately two points. Both candidates expressed early Wednesday that the outcome of the race would likely be determined later that day.

Following a contentious primary marked by personal attacks among all three candidates, McMorrow encouraged Democrats to rally behind El-Sayed.

“Take it from me — this was a brutal primary. But whatever differences there were between the candidates in this race, those differences are nothing compared to the contrast in November,” she remarked.

McMorrow’s campaign concluded after she struggled to position herself between Stevens’ moderate approach and El-Sayed’s progressive agenda. Nonetheless, she managed to secure tens of thousands of votes in the state during Tuesday’s primary, a race that might be decided by a similarly narrow margin.

In endorsing El-Sayed, McMorrow referred to him as “winning” the Democratic nomination, following some media outlets’ declaration of El-Sayed’s victory. However, the Associated Press has not yet announced an official winner.
