UPDATE: NBC has declared Abdul El-Sayed as the winner of the Michigan Senate race, identifying him as a far-left Democratic Socialist.

Abdul El-Sayed is poised to overtake the moderate Democrat in the Michigan Democratic Primary for Senator, according to the latest projections.

Haley Stevens, who received support from Michigan’s Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Senator Chuck Schumer, was unable to secure the nomination.

El-Sayed will compete against Mike Rogers, who was unchallenged in the GOP primary, in the upcoming November general election.

Although El-Sayed has refuted claims of being a socialist, he has participated in at least six events hosted by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), as reported by Fox.

El-Sayed stated in an interview, “I’m not technically or practically DSA. I am not somebody who is a socialist. I believe in capitalism; I just believe that capitalism has to be regulated.” He was described as “a longtime friend of Detroit DSA” during a 2019 event where he was seen with Rashida Tlaib, a socialist representative.

On the eve of the election, El-Sayed was observed at a gathering with Hasan Piker, a controversial figure, alongside socialist candidates Melat Kiros from Colorado and Chris Rabb from Pennsylvania. Piker later attended El-Sayed’s election night event, according to Fox News.

Outgoing Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer supported Haley Stevens financially, with over $60 million reportedly funneled into her campaign by external groups.

El-Sayed, on the other hand, garnered support from progressive figures like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. His platform, which includes Medicare for all, wealth taxes, and Supreme Court term limits, aligns with DSA principles.

El-Sayed has faced criticism, including allegations of sympathizing with terrorists. While speaking with Hasan Piker, he addressed the March attack on Temple Israel in Michigan, saying, “I think it’s just critical for us to understand that hurt people do hurt people, and the circumstances happening 6,000 miles away can affect the lives that we live here.”

El-Sayed initially led by almost 30% in early voting results, though Stevens narrowed the gap throughout the evening. By midnight, El-Sayed maintained a 3.5% lead, with about 500,000 ballots still to be counted.

The outcome may hinge on Wayne County, the state’s largest, which includes Detroit. According to CNN, “Stevens is currently holding a slight majority in Wayne, but her advantage has diminished as more votes from Detroit and the predominantly Arab-American Dearborn have been tallied.”

This story is still unfolding.
