There are various reasons why this can occur. Firstly, when the warm air inside a smartphone cools rapidly, it leads to condensation, which may accumulate in gaps or on crucial components. Removing the device from the fridge causes it to warm up again, further increasing the risk of moisture build-up. This can be extremely damaging, even for devices with a high IP rating.

Additionally, lithium-ion batteries in smartphones are not built to handle quick temperature shifts, whether from hot to cold or vice versa. Therefore, it’s crucial to avoid leaving devices outside for extended periods, regardless of the season.

In extreme cases, this can result in battery damage, ranging from accelerated degradation to battery swelling or even fires, which are notoriously difficult to extinguish. Even if the battery isn’t yet compromised, fixing the damaged hardware can be costly.

A better approach

If your smartphone begins to overheat, it’s important not to react impulsively. Disconnect it from any charging sources and place it in a shaded area to allow it to cool down gradually and safely.

Close any apps or processes that are heavily using the RAM or running continuously in the background, and consider enabling airplane mode to reduce heat generation. Removing protective cases, especially those made of silicone or leather, can also aid in heat dissipation.

If the device remains hot, activate power-saving mode or turn it off completely to alleviate battery strain. Although special mobile phone coolers are available on platforms like Amazon, their efficacy has yet to be proven.
