Andrew Windsor continues to hold the eighth position in the line of succession, while King Charles’ efforts to streamline the royal order face significant constitutional challenges and political complexities within the Commonwealth.

According to RadarOnline.com, the 66-year-old, who was stripped of his titles by King Charles last year, remains on the succession list. Changing his position would necessitate agreement among 15 realms, including Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

This situation places Prince Harry, 41, and his children ahead of Andrew, as officials consider potential actions against Andrew following a police investigation linked to his association with Jeffrey Epstein, who died in 2019.

A palace insider disclosed to Radar: “Andrew remains in his position due to legal stipulations, not public opinion. Removing him would require a coordinated legislative effort across the Commonwealth, which is beyond a simple palace decision.”

The source continued: “There is notable frustration over his continued presence in the line of succession, but the constitutional process is slow. Without a concerted effort from governments on both sides of the Atlantic, he stays by default.”

A constitutional expert explained: “This is not a matter of Parliament making a straightforward change. Each realm sharing the monarch has its own legal duties, and all would need to agree on a uniform amendment.”

The expert further noted: “This situation poses a diplomatic challenge, as the likelihood of Andrew becoming king is extremely low, yet the legal procedures to remove him are extensive. What seems simple in a headline becomes complex with legal involvement.”

Andrew’s situation has worsened as public discontent has grown following his release under investigation for suspected misconduct in public office.

A YouGov poll indicated that 82 percent of Britons want him removed from the succession, with only 6 percent supporting his retention.

Andrew Bowie, a senior Conservative MP, commented: “It would be appropriate for him to step down voluntarily, and should Parliament need to intervene, a strong case could be made. However, he has not been charged, and the police must be allowed to conduct their investigation.”

Ed Davey, leader of the UK’s Liberal Democrat party, remarked: “Parliament might need to address this issue at an appropriate time. Currently, the focus should be on allowing the police to investigate thoroughly, free of interference.”

Under existing rules, the line of succession proceeds from Prince William, 44, and his children, then Prince Harry, 41, and his children Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, before reaching Andrew.

If Andrew were removed, those following him would not advance in the line; the gap would simply close.

A parliamentary source stated: “There is a strong political drive to act, but the legal framework is rigid. Some governments may not want to allocate limited parliamentary resources to a change unlikely to have real-world implications.”

The source added: “Despite the uproar, Andrew’s position is more symbolic than practical. An improbable series of events would be needed for him to approach the throne, making the issue more about public perception than literal succession.”

A constitutional expert summarized: “Currently, the line of succession places Harry ahead of Andrew, so if William’s son George were to become king while a minor, Harry would serve as regent first.

“If Harry were unavailable, the next choice would be Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, followed by Princess Beatrice if necessary. This scenario shows how Andrew might bypass Harry in the line of succession.”
