While often linked with catastrophic destruction, space rocks can also offer valuable insights into the universe. Meteorites that are too small to pose a threat to Earth reveal information about alien environments, some predating our solar system.
Historically, meteorites were prized for their symbolic significance and as a rare source of iron in pre-Iron Age societies. Influential ancient cultures, such as the Minoans and Mycenaeans, known for their myths and epic tales, used meteorite iron to craft ornate rings that symbolized power and status, according to a study featured in the Journal of Archaeological Science.

Throughout different eras, meteorites have been fashioned into tools, weapons, and jewelry across the globe: scrapers in Greenland, axe-like votives in China, jewels in pre-Columbian cultures, and protective talismans for Egyptian herders. The famous space dagger of King Tut exemplifies their allure. However, such items are notably absent in Bronze Age Greece.
Researchers focused on two main questions: Did the Minoans and Mycenaeans use meteoritic iron in their artifacts? And when did they start smelting iron?
During a five-year study, the chemical makeup of over 100 artifacts from present-day Greece was examined, concentrating on 91 iron objects like rings, bracelets, and knives from the Bronze Age, dating back 3,800 to 3,000 years. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence revealed that 13 items contained nickel, suggesting they were crafted from meteoritic iron.
All 13 items were elaborate rings incorporating gold or silver and possibly featured signets, such as royal seals.

Most of these rings were found in opulent burial sites, such as Mycenaean tombs. One ring was even discovered on a supposed high priest in a Minoan necropolis.
According to researchers, “these observations led us to speculate that rings likely made out of meteorites may have been popular power symbols among prominent individuals, members of the Minoan and Mycenaean palatial elite.”
The meteoritic iron likely came from Egypt, as Greece’s geography makes it challenging for meteorites to remain intact, often disintegrating or being lost to the sea.

The analysis also showed that 78 iron objects were made from smelted iron, not cosmic iron. This suggests smelted iron artifacts might have appeared in Greece as early as 1400 BCE, although only two, a pendant and a ring, were made before 1200 BCE.
Interestingly, compared to Anatolia, “the use of man-made iron seems to have been somehow delayed in Greece,” researchers note, suggesting these items might have been imported from Cyprus.

The trend of meteorite rings persisted until about 1200 BCE, possibly ending due to supply challenges, changing tastes, or other factors.
Researchers conclude it’s “possible that the meteoritic finger ring fashion, almost exclusive to Minoan and Mycenaean Late Bronze Age, has ‘naturally’ faded away as does any fashion.”
