Artist Janny Baek’s ceramic sculptures are like life forms undergoing a beautiful and strange transformation. Fusing vibrant colors, eclectic patterns, and botanical elements, Baek’s work explores our complex relationship with the natural world.

Incorporating blooming flowers and fluffy clouds into her sculptures, Baek reflects on the interconnectedness between humans and nature. The shapes and colors in her pieces suggest change, potential, and desire, drawing inspiration from familiar forms like vessels, plants, and heads as a way to connect to the tradition of hand-building with clay.

Baek’s sculptures, which range from around a foot tall to up to 20 inches in height, often feature coral-like appendages or stand on four legs, blurring the lines between nature, science fiction, and fantasy. She primarily works with colored porcelain using the nerikomi technique, where multiple pigmented clays are combined to create marbled or patterned effects. Recently, she has started experimenting with rougher, sandy stoneware, allowing for larger and more intricate pieces.

“Even if I shift materials or techniques, I’m always drawing from the main foundational ideas that drive my work,” Baek explains. Her piece “Walking Cloudbloom” is currently on display at the Korean International Ceramics Biennale exhibit in South Korea and she is preparing for a three-person show at ArtYard in New Jersey.

Baek’s website and Instagram showcase more of her mesmerizing ceramic sculptures, each a testament to her creative vision and skilled craftsmanship. From the colorful and abstract “Blended Party” to the intricate “Cloudbloom with Small Clouds,” Baek’s work invites viewers into a world where nature and imagination collide.

As you explore her sculptures, you’ll find yourself immersed in a realm where art and nature intertwine, where vibrant colors and organic shapes come together to create a truly unique and captivating experience. Visit Baek’s website or follow her on Instagram to stay updated on her latest creations and upcoming exhibitions.
