Google Reportedly Cancels Pixel Tablet 3, Signals Shift in Tablet Market Strategy

The Android tablet market has been a rollercoaster ride in recent times, with Google now reportedly considering pulling out of the race by cancelling its Pixel Tablet 3, codenamed ‘Kiyomi.’ This decision, as reported by Android Headlines, has raised eyebrows and speculation about the tech giant’s future in the tablet space.

According to Android Headlines, the Pixel Tablet 3 project was scrapped just last week, with Google’s internal teams being informed of the move shortly after. Employees working on the project have already been reassigned to other initiatives within the company, signalling a clear change in Google’s hardware priorities.

This development comes on the heels of Google’s 2023 release of the Pixel Tablet, marking its return to the tablet market after a hiatus that began in 2019. However, with the cancellation of the Pixel Tablet 3, it seems that the Pixel Tablet 2, set for release next year, may be Google’s final attempt at tablets for the foreseeable future.

The decision to cancel the Pixel Tablet 3 has sparked discussions about Google’s overall strategy. Rumors suggest that the company may be considering combining ChromeOS with Android to enhance the competitiveness of Android tablets against the iPad. Additionally, reports indicate that Google might be working on its first Pixel Laptop, potentially signaling a shift away from its current hardware roadmap and a concession of the tablet space to competitors.

While Android continues to improve tablet-friendly features, Google’s hardware efforts in the tablet market seem to be dwindling once again. The rumored Pixel Tablet 2, which was expected to come with a first-party keyboard case, may now launch as the final iteration of Google’s tablet lineup, with no successor in the pipeline.

On the other hand, the recent launch of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold suggests that Google might be shifting its focus towards foldable phones that double up as tablets when unfolded. These devices often boast additional features and enhanced power, potentially hinting at Google’s future direction in the mobile device market.

As the tablet market landscape evolves, only time will tell how Google’s decisions will play out. In the meantime, keep an eye out for updates on the upcoming Pixel 10 series expected next year. Stay tuned for more developments in Google’s hardware strategy and product lineup.
