Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts has identified a significant legal question regarding Trump’s power to demolish the White House and construct a ballroom in its place.

In his order, Roberts stated:

UPON CONSIDERATION of the application of counsel for the applicants, the response, and the reply filed thereto,

IT IS ORDERED that the preliminary injunction entered on April 16, 2026, by the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, case No. 1:25-cv-4316, is hereby stayed pending further order of the undersigned or of the Court.

According to CNN:

The construction is advancing swiftly, with a crew of 250 working around the clock, 20 hours a day, every day of the week. This information was provided by the Trump administration in a filing to the Supreme Court. They estimate that the ballroom complex is “65% complete in its entirety.”

Chief Justice John Roberts, responsible for emergency cases from the DC Circuit Court of Appeals, issued an order without setting a new deadline. As a result, construction at the White House can proceed until the Supreme Court makes a further ruling.

Should the conservative majority delay in addressing the case, the ballroom could be completed before any further decision by the Supreme Court is made.
