Shelley Fabares, known for her roles in the iconic sitcoms “The Donna Reed Show” and “Coach,” passed away on Saturday in Los Angeles at the age of 82.

In a statement, Fabares’ family expressed their deep sorrow, saying, “We will miss her deeply — not only as a celebrated performer, but as the loving and extraordinary person she was in our everyday lives. We are heartbroken by her loss, yet profoundly grateful for the years we shared with her and for the joy, compassion, and love she brought to so many. We ask that our family’s privacy be respected as we grieve. We take comfort in knowing that Shelley’s work and the memories she created with those who loved her will continue to live on.”

Fabares portrayed the Stone family daughter, Mary, in “The Donna Reed Show,” which aired on ABC for 275 episodes between 1958 and 1966. She featured in 192 episodes before departing the series in 1965. In ABC’s “Coach,” which consisted of 199 episodes from 1989 to 1997, she played Christine Armstrong, a TV news anchor and the love interest of Craig T. Nelson’s character, college football coach Hayden Fox. Her performance on the series earned her two Emmy nominations for supporting comedy actress in 1993 and 1994.

During her time on “The Donna Reed Show,” Fabares also pursued a brief career as a singer, achieving a No. 1 hit with her 1961 song “Johnny Angel.” She leveraged her television fame into a series of teen-focused B-movies, including 1964’s “Ride the Wild Surf” opposite Fabian, and co-starred with Elvis Presley in three films: “Girl Happy” (1965), “Spinout!” (1966), and “Clambake” (1967).

Fabares’ other television roles include appearances in “The Little People,” “Forever Fernwood,” “The Practice,” “Hello, Larry,” “Highcliffe Manor,” “Fantasy Island,” “One Day at a Time,” and “The Love Boat.” She also played a significant role in one of the most acclaimed TV movies of the 1970s, ABC’s “Brian’s Song,” in which she portrayed Joy Piccolo, the wife of James Caan’s character, Brian Piccolo.

Born in Santa Monica, California, in January 1944, Fabares grew up in the Hollywood scene. Her mother, Elsa, began a modeling career at an early age, which led to TV roles. Fabares’ aunt, Nanette Fabray, was a notable Broadway star and film actress who transitioned to television. Fabares’ early TV career included a two-episode role on “The Loretta Young Show” in 1954, and her first major film appearance was in the 1956 Rock Hudson drama “Never Say Goodbye,” produced by Universal International.

In the mid-1960s, Fabares was briefly married to influential music and movie producer Lou Adler. In 1984, she married actor Mike Farrell, famed for his role in the CBS comedy “MASH.” Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Farrell and Fabares were actively involved in various political and social causes, including opposing U.S. activities in Central America and supporting the anti-nuclear movement in Southern California.

Alongside Farrell, Fabares played an active role behind the scenes as a longtime member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). She participated in guild leadership and contributed to organizing some of the early SAG Awards ceremonies. In 1998, Fabares supported initial efforts to merge SAG with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

After “Coach” concluded, Fabares’ film and TV appearances became sparse as she faced health challenges. In 2000, she publicly underwent a health crisis requiring — and eventually receiving — a successful liver transplant. Her experience, which involved nearly two years of waiting for a donor liver, helped raise awareness about the critical need for organ donations.
