Four Questions Worth Asking Before You Buy Anything For Your Sleep

Four Questions Worth Asking Before You Buy Anything For Your Sleep

The sleep product section has silently grown to become a significant part of the wellness industry, featuring sprays, weighted blankets, rings, mouth tape, gummies, sound machines, and apps that claim to soothe you to sleep. While many of these items are enjoyable, some are costly, and almost none provide a clear indication of their effectiveness.

Before purchasing any sleep aid, consider four practical questions. These inquiries are straightforward and require no prior knowledge of sleep science. You can evaluate all four in just a minute while holding the product.

1. Are You Seeking a Temporary Fix or a Comprehensive Solution?

Consider your needs before the product itself. Both temporary fixes and comprehensive solutions are valid purchases, but they serve different purposes.

On some nights, you might just need a quick fix to unwind from a long flight, a noisy hotel, or a rough Tuesday. In such cases, a pillow spray or a sleep story might suffice, often delivering on its promise.

However, if you’ve been struggling with poor sleep for months and are seeking a significant change, you might be looking for a comprehensive solution, which most products in the aisle don’t offer. Many sleep aids are transparent about offering comfort rather than treatment. Disappointment often arises when one expects a major change from a product meant for temporary relief.

2. Is There Solid Evidence Supporting It, and What Type?

Instead of asking if there’s a study, consider the nature of the evidence available. Studies are often small and funded by the seller.

Examine whether a professional organization has endorsed the product in writing for your specific issue. Look for reviews beyond the product page and see if users still rely on it after three months. Also, assess whether those recommending it were compensated for their endorsement.

Many products lack formal recommendations, which isn’t always negative. For instance, no official stance exists on weighted blankets.

However, one area stands out: for chronic sleep issues, the American College of Physicians suggests cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) as a first-line treatment over medication. This independent recommendation provides a stronger endorsement than typical product claims.

One caution: the “CBT-I” label can be used loosely, as many apps adopt the name without including all its rigorous components, so the label alone may not be informative.

3. Does It Offer Long-Term Benefits?

A common question is, “What happens when you stop using it?” This doesn’t effectively categorize products since nearly all lose their effectiveness once discontinued. Ceasing to use a spray or maintaining a regular wake time often returns you to your initial state.

A more insightful question is whether the product imparts lasting changes. An eye mask, for example, is simple equipment, while adjusting your wake time alters behavior, which may have lasting effects once established.

Neither option is inherently superior. One involves ongoing costs, while the other requires an initial effort. Knowing what you’re committing to is crucial.

4. How Much Effort Will You Invest, and What Do You Expect in Return?

Address both parts of this question honestly, starting with the effort you’re willing to make.

Many sleep products demand minimal effort: spray, wear, or press play. If your goal is minor improvement, this effortless approach might be ideal.

However, products with independent support require more effort, such as maintaining a sleep diary for two weeks, adjusting your wake time, or leaving bed if you can’t sleep. This inconvenience often leads to discontinuation.

Avoid expecting significant results from products requiring minimal effort. If a sleep problem is long-standing, your established habits are a significant factor to address.

Where Does This Leave the Sleep Aisle?

The aisle remains largely unchanged. Items like eye masks and blackout blinds can be effective. If a sleep story helps you through a tough night, it’s worth it.

Remember not to dismiss the efficacy of all products just because some, like sprays, didn’t work. Relaxation is not opposed to behavioral methods; it can be part of a broader approach. The key difference is whether it’s an isolated practice or part of a comprehensive strategy that changes your overall habits.

The app Rest incorporates CBT-I principles and is among several in the market. If considering such apps, verify which follow the complete protocol instead of relying on app descriptions.
