SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, is set to broaden its operational scope with plans to establish a new spaceport in Louisiana, expanding beyond its existing South Texas Starbase. The company revealed the project on Tuesday, indicating that the facility will focus on launching the Starship megarocket. This initiative is designed to significantly increase SpaceX’s launch frequency to several thousand missions annually, as stated by the company.

Having recently transitioned to a public company with a valuation of $1.77 trillion, SpaceX intends to allocate at least $100 billion for the development of this spaceport on Pecan Island in southern Louisiana. This location is part of Vermilion Parish, an area renowned for its coastal marshlands. In a video announcement, Musk expressed that the new spaceport could generate thousands of employment opportunities for the local population. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, Vermilion Parish is home to approximately 57,000 residents.

SpaceX has also committed to preserving the wetlands surrounding the site. The company has previously encountered opposition through legal actions alleging environmental violations and property damage near its Texas Starbase.

SpaceX has christened the new facility Starbase, Louisiana, and Musk describes it as potentially the “biggest launch site on Earth.” By dedicating this site to the Starship, SpaceX aims to increase its launch frequency without affecting the operations of the Falcon 9 or Falcon Heavy rockets. The company envisions using Starship’s large cargo capacity to quickly expand its Starlink satellite Internet network and develop an orbital artificial intelligence data center. Currently, SpaceX operates launches from its Texas Starbase and other sites in Florida and California.

This development follows an executive order from U.S. President Donald Trump, declaring the onset of a “Golden Age” of space transportation. The order aims to increase rocket launches and reentries to over 1,000 annually by 2030, facilitating the construction of launch infrastructure and fostering a vibrant commercial space industry.
