Bird Flu Virus Identified In Raw Milk Sold In California

The recent discovery of bird flu in a sample of raw milk for sale in California has prompted an urgent recall by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). The affected product is cream top, whole raw milk produced and packaged by Raw Farm, LLC of Fresno County with lot code 2024110 and a best buy date of 11. Nov, 2024. Consumers are advised not to consume this product and should return it to stores or dispose of it.

No illnesses have been reported from this batch of milk so far, but symptoms of bird flu can take several days to develop. According to the World Health Organization, most people develop symptoms within 2-5 days of exposure, but it can take up to 17 days. Symptoms may include fever, chills, respiratory issues, muscle aches, headaches, and tiredness.

The CDPH has visited the farms of Raw Farm, LLC and found no further evidence of bird flu. They are continuing to test the farm’s milk twice a week to ensure the safety of their products. It is important to note that pasteurized milk is safe to consume as it is heated to temperatures that kill bacteria and viruses. Raw milk, on the other hand, does not go through this process and can contain harmful microbes.

Public health departments, including the CDC, have long warned against the dangers of consuming raw milk due to the risk of outbreaks of Listeria, E. coli, Campylobacter, and Salmonella. California has been facing bird flu outbreaks in dairy cow herds and poultry farms, with over 400 dairy herds affected as of November 22. There have also been 29 human cases reported in the state, mostly in individuals who have had close contact with infected livestock.

Recently, the CDC confirmed a case of H5N1 bird flu in a child in California with no known contact with livestock. This highlights the importance of taking precautions when it comes to food safety and being aware of the risks associated with consuming raw milk products. It is crucial for consumers to stay informed and follow guidelines provided by health authorities to protect their health and well-being.
