Exploring the Power of Barriers in Art

When we think of barriers like gates, fences, windows, and walls, we often see them as physical structures that separate and divide. However, the artists featured in ArtYard’s exhibition, Barrier, challenge this notion by delving into the deeper meanings and complexities of these architectures.

Through a diverse range of mediums such as sculpture, installation, video, painting, and works on paper, the artists in Barrier explore themes of property rights, geopolitical tensions, environmental issues, and personal experiences. Their works serve as a reflection on the ways in which barriers shape our lives and communities.

One of the central themes of Barrier is the idea of barriers as not just obstacles, but as opportunities for connection and transformation. By reimagining walls as bridges, the artists invite viewers to reconsider the ways in which barriers can be navigated and transcended.

The exhibition, curated by Kaitlin Pomerantz and Lucia Thomé, features the works of 12 artists, including Sandra SK Amoabeng, Matthew Colaizzo, and Ghida Dalloul. Each artist brings a unique perspective to the conversation, offering insights into displacement, memory, and resilience.

Alongside Barrier, ArtYard is also showcasing Unfinished Verses, an exhibition that explores the creative process through the sketchbooks of 10 contemporary artists. This interactive display allows visitors to see the evolution of artistic ideas over time.

If you’re interested in experiencing Barrier and Unfinished Verses, be sure to visit ArtYard in Frenchtown, New Jersey. The exhibitions will be on display until January 26, 2025, with public hours available Wednesday through Sunday.
