Kendis Gibson, former anchor of World News Now, has recently spoken out about his troubling experiences at ABC News. In a shocking revelation, the 52-year-old claims he faced a toxic work environment at the network, including instances of racism that ultimately led him to a suicide attempt.

In his upcoming book titled Five Trips: An Investigative Journey into Mental Health, Psychedelic Healing and Saving a Life, Gibson opens up about the toll his time at ABC took on his mental health. Despite receiving a warm reception from Good Morning America stars Michael Strahan, Robin Roberts, and George Stephanopoulos when he joined the network in 2014, Gibson quickly discovered the darker side of the workplace culture.

Gibson recalls a disturbing encounter with a black correspondent who ominously welcomed him to “Mickey’s plantation,” hinting at underlying racism within the organization. This unsettling moment set the tone for Gibson’s time at ABC, as he later took over the overnight anchor position at World News Now and struggled with insomnia and anxiety, resorting to medication to cope with the demands of the job.

The anchor also faced blatant discrimination, with a boss reprimanding him for wearing jeans on air and making derogatory comments about his appearance. Despite his efforts to promote diversity within the network, Gibson claims he faced retaliation and a decrease in opportunities, leading to further stress and emotional turmoil.

The breaking point came when Gibson, overwhelmed by the pressure and mistreatment, attempted to take his own life. After a harrowing experience that left him shaken, Gibson sought therapy and made the difficult decision to leave ABC, turning down a contract extension in favor of his well-being.

Following his departure, Gibson faced further challenges at MSNBC, where he was embroiled in a racial scandal involving his former boss. Despite the hardships, Gibson persevered and eventually found a new role at PIX11 News in NYC, where he continues to thrive in his career.

Gibson’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of mental health and the impact of workplace culture on individual well-being. His courage in speaking out against injustice and discrimination is a testament to his resilience and determination to create a better future for himself and others in the industry.
