During his university years, Prince William discreetly used a “codename” to blend in and avoid the constant scrutiny he faced, RadarOnline.com reports. This strategy allowed him to experience a more typical student life while studying in Scotland.
At 44, William enrolled in the University of St Andrews in 2001 after a gap year. Initially, he pursued Art History before changing his major to Geography. It was here that he met Catherine, the Princess of Wales, who is also 44.
Despite being one of the most well-known young royals, an agreement with the British press and his use of the alias “Steve” helped him avoid much of the media attention that had marked his early years.
Dr. Brian Lang, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of St Andrews during William’s time, discussed the extensive measures taken to protect William’s privacy. He highlighted the effective cooperation between the university and the media.
Lang noted, “Andrew Neil, the Lord Rector of the university and an experienced newspaperman, helped us arrange an agreement with the British press to leave William alone, providing a photo opportunity once each semester. Generally, this was successful.”
He emphasized that protecting William’s privacy was a priority from the moment his attendance was confirmed, yet this policy was applied to all students, not just the prince.
Lang explained, “When we knew William would attend, I informed the student body through an interview in the student newspaper that we expected them to respect privacy, not only for William but for all students.”
He stressed that privacy was a core principle of the university’s culture. “This was a privacy issue for all students, staff, and William alike. The privacy policies were enforced campus-wide, and overall, they were effective.”
Reflecting on William’s time at St Andrews, Lang praised both students and staff for maintaining discretion despite the presence of a royal.
Lang shared, “After William left, a newspaper editor was amazed at the discipline and confidentiality maintained by students during his time there. They acted commendably.”
“This speaks volumes about the student body and staff at St Andrews; nothing inappropriate or noteworthy was leaked.”
William has continued to uphold boundaries between his public duties and private life. He frequently highlights the impact of media intrusion during his childhood and stresses the importance of ensuring a more normal upbringing for his children – Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, eight.
During a conversation with actor Eugene Levy on The Reluctant Traveler in October 2025, William, reflecting on his late mother Princess Diana, expressed his desire for his son to be proud of their work, which positively impacts people’s lives.
He stated, “I hope we don’t revert to past practices that Harry and I experienced growing up. I’ll do everything to avoid that.”
William continued, “I witnessed the effects of media intrusion on family life firsthand. I’ve vowed to ensure it doesn’t happen to my family.”
