A New Frontier in Search Missions: Cyborg Cockroach Swarms

Researchers at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore have developed a groundbreaking technology that turns cockroaches into controllable cyborgs. This innovative robotic arm has the potential to revolutionize search missions by creating swarms of biological robots capable of navigating challenging terrains.

Lead by Hirotaka Sato, the team has successfully demonstrated that groups of Madagascar hissing cockroaches (Gromphadorhina portentosa) fitted with electronic backpacks can be remotely steered across desert-like environments. While this technology shows great promise, the researchers estimate that hundreds or even thousands of these cyborg insects would be required for real-world search-and-rescue operations.
