This trip, a birthday gift for Ada, was special because she admired Roan.

Accounts of the subsequent events vary. Ada’s stepfather, Brazilian soccer player Jorginho, stated that Ada saw Roan at breakfast, quietly confirmed her identity from a distance, smiled, and then returned to sit with her mother without saying or asking anything. Jorginho claims a security guard then approached them in an aggressive manner, accusing the child of disrespect and harassment, and threatened to report them to the hotel, leaving Ada in tears.

Jorginho expressed his frustration on Instagram, tagging Roan directly with a message in capital letters: “WITHOUT YOUR FANS, YOU WOULD BE NOTHING. AND TO THE FANS, SHE DOES NOT DESERVE YOUR AFFECTION.”

Roan responded in an Instagram story after her Lollapalooza performance, denying any involvement in the incident. She stated that she did not see Ada or her mother, nor did anyone approach her, and she did not instruct any security personnel to interact with them. Roan apologized to Ada and her mother, expressing regret for their experience.

Later, the security guard involved, Pascal Duvier, issued a statement on Instagram accepting full responsibility for the situation. He clarified that he was not part of Roan’s security team and was acting on behalf of someone else. He admitted to making a judgment call based on previous information and events, acknowledging the regrettable outcome.

Despite Duvier’s confession, the matter largely remained unresolved. The Tangará Palace hotel released a statement distancing itself from the incident, which many interpreted as implicit support for Jorginho’s family. Catherine Harding acknowledged the possibility that Roan might not have sent the guard, but emphasized that celebrities are accountable for the actions of people representing them, formally or informally. “Would he do that if he didn’t have her authority to do so? I don’t know,” Harding remarked.

The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Cavaliere, took a stronger stance by announcing on X that Roan would not be allowed to perform at Todo Mundo no Rio, the city’s extensive free concert series on Copacabana Beach, which had previously featured artists like Madonna and Lady Gaga.

The incident in Brazil wasn’t an isolated event. Chappell Roan has been openly navigating the complexities of fame and personal boundaries for nearly two years. In August 2024, she addressed the unwanted attention she faced, establishing boundaries between her public and private life. Roan told the BBC that she would always defend herself and humorously suggested she might have more success if she accepted wearing a muzzle. She confronted a photographer at a film premiere due to previous treatment and had disagreements with fans over perceived boundary violations.

These incidents have contributed to a complex public image. Some view her as an artist defending herself in a challenging industry, while others perceive her as confusing the right to boundaries with being unapproachable. “I always say to people: what comes with success are sacrifices,” he noted. “I hope you like people. Because if you don’t like people, here’s how it’s going to sound. Reflecting on his own experiences, he added, “I was invisible once,” and emphasized the importance of acknowledging fans, saying, “There’s a person who is scared to death of you. They want to say something to you. You can see it on their face. For me to ignore them would be the worst.” He also cautioned about reputations, saying, “You know what travels fast? That guy was a freaking d–k.”
