Three men have been detained in Chicago after being accused of robbing four victims at gunpoint and assaulting one victim with a handgun. The incidents took place on November 22nd between 2:30 p.m. and 4:48 p.m., according to Chicago police records. Kavon Waddell, 21, and Glen Ruiz, 24, allegedly jumped out of a stolen Infiniti SUV to rob men on the street, while Curtis Benson, 19, allegedly drove the vehicle.
The first victim, a 48-year-old man, was robbed of his wallet at gunpoint in the 3100 block of West 46th Street. Another victim, a 46-year-old man, was robbed in the 4400 block of South Sacramento. The third robbery turned violent when Waddell and Ruiz confronted two men in the 4600 block of South Kilpatrick with firearms. During the holdup, Waddell beat a 46-year-old victim with a handgun.
A CPD helicopter located the Infiniti and directed ground units to its location. The men tried to flee the vehicle in the 3500 block of West Thomas, but were apprehended by police. Waddell was found hiding inside a garbage can, Ruiz was located under a home’s front stairs, and Benson was taken into custody after a foot chase.
Each of the men is facing charges of four counts of armed robbery, aggravated battery in a public place, and misdemeanor criminal trespass to a vehicle. Although a firearm was discovered on one of the men’s escape routes, they have not been charged with weapon possession. Judge William Fahy presided over the men’s detention hearing and ordered them to be jailed. Ruiz had previously been adjudicated delinquent for attempted murder as a juvenile, and Benson had a “recent” armed robbery conviction.
