In a recent update, the Boulder Police Department revealed that five college students from the Kappa Sigma fraternity fell seriously ill over the weekend after consuming excessive amounts of alcohol. Initially, the incident was thought to involve overdoses related to tainted drugs, but further investigation showed that alcohol played a significant role in the students’ condition.

The police had originally stated that a group of men had overdosed after ingesting a potentially tainted batch of cocaine at a party, with alcohol also being a factor. However, it was later confirmed that fentanyl was not involved in the incident, and that the students had consumed a large quantity of alcohol along with some drugs, leading to their illness.

During the investigation, detectives found cocaine at the scene, which is currently being tested. Five men were either treated on-site or taken to the hospital, with one remaining hospitalized in critical condition as of Tuesday.

Kappa Sigma is one of three “rogue” fraternities at the University of Colorado that are not affiliated with any Greek oversight organizations. The fraternity’s history of hosting parties that violated risk management rules led to their departure from the Interfraternity Council on the Hill several years ago.

While CU Boulder has implemented measures to address student conduct and provide support services, unaffiliated organizations like Kappa Sigma pose a challenge in terms of oversight and accountability. The university is collaborating with law enforcement to investigate the incident, and disciplinary actions will be determined based on the outcome of the investigation.

Michael Smith, chief advocate of the Interfraternity Council on the Hill, emphasized the importance of prompt medical intervention in cases of distress among fraternity members. The council’s proactive approach to monitoring social events and educating students on health and safety issues has helped prevent tragedies within the Greek community.

As the investigation continues, CU Boulder and local authorities are working together to address the implications of the incident and ensure the well-being of students involved. The university remains committed to upholding its Student Code of Conduct and promoting a safe and responsible campus environment.
