OpenAI, in collaboration with India’s Tata Group, has made a significant move to secure 100 megawatts of AI-ready data center capacity in the country, with plans to scale up to 1 gigawatt. This partnership is part of OpenAI’s Stargate project, which aims to establish AI-ready infrastructure and enhance enterprise adoption on a global scale.

The announcement, made on Thursday, revealed that OpenAI will be the first customer of Tata Consultancy Services’ HyperVault data center business, starting with 100 megawatts of capacity. As part of the deal, OpenAI will deploy ChatGPT Enterprise across Tata’s workforce and standardize AI-native software development using OpenAI’s tools.

This collaboration falls under the “OpenAI for India” initiative, showcasing the company’s growing presence in the country. With over 100 million weekly ChatGPT users in India, spanning various sectors like education, technology, and entrepreneurship, the country has emerged as one of OpenAI’s key growth markets. By deepening its enterprise and infrastructure investments in India, OpenAI aims to cater to the increasing demand for AI technologies in the region.

The local data center capacity will enable OpenAI to run its most advanced models within India, ensuring reduced latency for users and compliance with data residency, security, and regulatory requirements. This move is crucial for enterprises dealing with sensitive data and operating under strict data localization laws, providing them with in-country processing solutions.

The initial commitment of 100 megawatts signifies a substantial investment in AI infrastructure, considering the power-intensive nature of large-scale model training and inference processes. Scaling up to 1 gigawatt over time would position the Tata facility as one of the largest AI-focused data center deployments globally, emphasizing OpenAI’s long-term vision for India.

Apart from infrastructure development, OpenAI and Tata Group will embark on a strategic enterprise collaboration to accelerate AI adoption across Tata’s businesses. The conglomerate plans to introduce ChatGPT Enterprise to its workforce, starting with hundreds of thousands of employees at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). Additionally, TCS will leverage OpenAI’s Codex tools to streamline AI-native software development across its engineering teams.

N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, emphasizing the importance of building cutting-edge AI infrastructure in India and upskilling the workforce for the AI era.

As part of the deal, OpenAI will also expand its certification programs in India, with TCS becoming the first organization outside the United States to participate. These certifications are designed to equip professionals with practical AI skills across various industries. Furthermore, OpenAI plans to establish new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year, complementing its existing presence in New Delhi to strengthen its operations in India.

The announcement coincides with India’s AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, where global AI leaders, Indian startups, and enterprises are showcasing AI applications in sectors like finance, healthcare, and education. OpenAI’s partnerships with leading Indian companies and institutions underscore its commitment to embedding AI models across consumer platforms, enterprise systems, and digital infrastructure in India.

In conclusion, the collaboration between OpenAI and Tata Group represents a significant step towards establishing advanced AI infrastructure and applications in India, marking OpenAI’s most comprehensive effort to anchor its presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing markets.
