The 2023 animated short film, “The Waiting,” directed by Volker Schlecht and written by Alexander Lahl and Max Mönch, delves into the mysterious disappearance of tree frogs in Costa Rica. The protagonist of the film, biologist Karen Lips, sets the stage with her poignant statement about the crime scene without evidence or a murder weapon, hinting at a compelling mystery with broader implications.

The film, predominantly hand-drawn in black and white, showcases the transformation of rainforest creatures from plants and tadpoles into fully grown amphibians. Lips, who conducted research in the Costa Rican rainforest in the 1990s, observed a group of fluorescent green tree frogs, known as Isthmohyla calypsa, in a small shack called “la casita.” These unique frogs possessed distinctive spikes on their hands, used for combat and dominance within their habitat.

After studying the growth patterns, behavior, and habitat of Isthmohyla calypsa for nearly two years, Lips returned to the University of Miami to document her findings. However, upon her return to the forest for a final experiment, she discovered the alarming disappearance of the frogs. Perplexed and initially blaming herself, Lips contemplated various reasons for their vanishing act, from fear to environmental factors like rainfall.

Despite waiting patiently for the frogs to return, they never did. Lips was left with a cold case, devoid of evidence or clues to investigate. The mystery deepened when she relocated to study a new group of frogs, only to witness unusual skin problems among them. The culprit behind the disappearances was identified as microscopic fungi known as chytrids, a global phenomenon affecting amphibian populations worldwide.

Lips emphasized that human activities, such as the global trade of goods, play a significant role in spreading invasive and harmful organisms like chytrids. The consequences of these actions are devastating, with an estimated 150 to 200 frog species becoming extinct in recent decades. Alarmingly, 41% of all amphibians are in decline, making them one of the most vulnerable animal groups on the planet.

“The Waiting” sheds light on the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the impact of human actions on wildlife. Through the lens of a biologist’s quest to solve a frog disappearance mystery, the film underscores the urgency of conservation efforts and responsible environmental stewardship.
