The AFC playoff picture is starting to take shape as we head into Week 15 of the 2024 NFL season. With two division winners already crowned, the race for the top seed in the conference is heating up.

The Kansas City Chiefs secured the AFC West division title for the ninth consecutive season after defeating the LA Chargers 19-17 in a close game on Sunday night. The Chiefs are now aiming to claim the No. 1 seed in the AFC, with their most recent victory helping their cause.

Despite the win, the Buffalo Bills suffered a stunning loss to the LA Rams, which hurt their chances of securing the No. 1 seed. The Bills dropped to 10-3 for the season, while the Chiefs improved to 12-1. The Chiefs now have a good chance of securing the top spot in the conference if they win three of their next four regular-season games.

In the AFC North, the Pittsburgh Steelers extended their lead at the top of the standings by defeating the Cleveland Browns 27-14. Quarterback Russell Wilson threw two touchdowns to help the Steelers secure the victory. The win raised the Steelers’ record to 10-3, giving them a two-game lead over the Baltimore Ravens (8-5) with four games remaining.

Unfortunately for the Browns and the New York Jets, their postseason hopes were dashed in Week 14. The Browns were eliminated from playoff contention after their loss to the Steelers, while the Jets suffered the same fate after falling to the Miami Dolphins 32-26 in overtime. The Jets are currently enduring the worst postseason drought in their history, with 14 years since their last playoff appearance.

As we head into the final weeks of the regular season, the race for playoff seeding and wildcard spots in the AFC is sure to intensify. With several teams still in the hunt for postseason berths, every game will be crucial in determining the final playoff picture in the conference. The New York Jets have had a tough time making it to the postseason in recent years. In fact, only five teams in the Super Bowl era have gone longer without playing in the playoffs than the Jets.

The longest playoff drought in the NFL belongs to the New Orleans Saints, who went 20 years without a postseason appearance from 1967 to 1986. Following closely behind are the Buffalo Bills and the Cleveland Browns, both enduring 17-year playoff droughts from 2000 to 2016 and 2003 to 2019, respectively.

The New York Giants and the Arizona Cardinals each had a 15-year playoff drought, with the Giants missing out from 1966 to 1980 and the Cardinals from 1983 to 1997. These teams have all faced their fair share of struggles in reaching the postseason, but the Jets’ current situation is still a cause for concern.

As of Week 14 in the AFC playoff picture, the Jets find themselves at the bottom of the standings with a record of 3-10. They are officially eliminated from playoff contention, joining other struggling teams like the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans, and New England Patriots.

On the other hand, teams like the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers, Houston Texans, Baltimore Ravens, Los Angeles Chargers, and Denver Broncos are all in the hunt for a playoff spot. With only a few weeks left in the regular season, the competition is heating up as teams jockey for position in the postseason race.

It’s clear that the Jets have a long way to go before they can break their playoff drought and compete with the top teams in the league. But as history has shown, anything is possible in the NFL, and with the right moves and determination, the Jets could turn their fortunes around in the future.
