Jonathan Simkhai Draws Inspiration from LACMA for Texture-Heavy Pre-Spring Collection
Jonathan Simkhai found inspiration for his latest collection during a trip to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The exhibition, ‘Woven Histories: Textiles and Modern Abstractions’, sparked his creativity and led to a collection that combines tactile and streamlined elements.
Speaking over Zoom from his home in LA, Simkhai shared his design process. “I love embroideries and different weaving techniques like macramés,” he said. “Pairing them against clean and sculpted silhouettes creates a tension that I find intriguing. I enjoy mixing something soft with something sculpted or something crafty with something modern.”
The collection features texture-heavy pieces like a black gown with a structured bodice that flows into a pleated and bonded ball skirt in a checkerboard pattern. A mini dress is embellished with sequins in a 3D effect along the neckline and hem. “This guipure embroidery technique is a nod to my grandfather’s lace mill,” Simkhai explained. “I always strive to reinvent guipure and embroideries to create a fresh aesthetic.”
Simkhai’s approach to pre-spring collections focuses on instant gratification, with deliveries just in time for the holidays. The use of draped jersey fabric allows for versatility, making pieces like an ombré midi dress with ruching at the waist suitable for year-round wear. A woven fringe dress in a vibrant lime green is a standout option for holiday parties and beyond, with a playful twist on traditional holiday colors.
As Simkhai looks ahead to his future collections, he draws inspiration from his clients who have a passion for fashion and a desire to stay ahead of trends. “Their love for seeing what’s new and next really drives me,” he said. “I thrive on creating fresh and innovative designs for them.”
