ESPN Analyst Dick Vitale Announces He Is Again Cancer Free

Legendary men’s college basketball analyst Dick Vitale has some exciting news to share – he is once again cancer-free! The 85-year-old coach-turned-broadcaster made the announcement on December 12 via social media, expressing gratitude for the clean bill of health he received from his doctor.

Vitale joyfully exclaimed, “SANTA CLAUS came early as Dr Rick Brown called & said that my PET SCAN at 7 AM came back CLEAN OF CANCER! OMG thanks so much to ALL of YOU for your prayers. Yes, I’m cutting the nets down baby, it’s my National Championship!”

This marks Vitale’s fourth separate cancer diagnosis, having previously battled melanoma, lymphoma, and vocal cord cancer. Despite undergoing surgery over the summer, Vitale remained optimistic and focused on his recovery. He took a break from his broadcasting duties during the 2023-24 season to prioritize his health but expressed his hope to return to the mic soon.

Known for his infectious enthusiasm for college basketball and iconic catchphrases like “awesome, baby” and “diaper dandy,” Vitale has garnered immense support from the men’s college basketball community. Fans, writers, players, and fellow broadcasters flooded his social media with well-wishes and messages of encouragement.

In his response to the overwhelming outpouring of love, Vitale emphasized the importance of staying positive and having faith when faced with adversity. He urged everyone to extend words of encouragement to those battling cancer and to always maintain a positive outlook in the face of challenges.

Vitale’s contributions to cancer research and awareness have been significant, particularly through his involvement in the Jimmy V Classic on ESPN. The annual event, held in honor of the late NC State coach Jim Valvano, raises funds for the V Foundation for Cancer Research and has expanded to include women’s basketball games.

During this year’s Jimmy V Classic, Vitale recorded a heartfelt message from his home in Florida, offering words of solidarity and encouragement to cancer patients. He shared his philosophy of staying positive and having faith as key components in overcoming any disease, drawing from his own experiences battling cancer.

Since its inception in 1993, the V Foundation has raised over $350 million for cancer research, a testament to Vitale’s unwavering commitment to the cause. As he celebrates being cancer-free once again, Vitale continues to inspire others with his resilience, positivity, and dedication to the fight against cancer.
