The Amazon rainforest is a treasure trove of biodiversity, with over 40,000 plant species, 1,300 bird varieties, and countless insects calling it home. However, this vital ecosystem is under threat, prompting organizations like Vital Impacts to raise funds for its preservation through initiatives like the annual print sale.

This year, Vital Impacts has launched the “Saving the Monarchs” campaign, featuring the work of renowned National Geographic photographer Jaime Rojo. Rojo has dedicated two decades to capturing the beauty of Monarch butterflies and their annual migration across North America. With their populations declining by 90% in recent years, efforts are underway to protect their habitats and ensure their survival.

The Monarch butterfly’s life cycle is a marvel to behold, from egg to larva to pupa and finally, the emergence of the adult butterfly with its vibrant orange and black wings. However, factors like the destruction of milkweed plants, essential for their reproduction, and the loss of overwintering habitats have contributed to their decline.

Initiatives like Monarch Watch focus on conservation, tracking the butterflies’ movements, and raising awareness about their plight. The annual print sale by Vital Impacts supports Monarch conservation efforts, with 60% of profits going towards this cause and supporting Indigenous communities in the Amazon Basin.

Rojo’s stunning photographs capture the beauty and fragility of the Monarch butterflies, from their wintering clusters in Mexico to their migration across North America. Through his work, he sheds light on the importance of preserving these iconic insects and their habitats.

By purchasing prints from the sale, you not only support Monarch conservation but also contribute to the storytellers driving positive change in our world. Together, we can make a difference in protecting these magnificent creatures and ensuring a sustainable future for our planet.
