Ahmet Gashi Arrested and Charged with Murder in Connection to 2006 Bronx Bar Fight Incident

A man previously sought in connection to the death of professional welterweight boxer Kemal Kolenovic in the Bronx on New Year’s Eve in 2006 has been arrested and charged with murder by the NYPD. Ahmet Gashi, a 42-year-old man from Kosovo, Serbia, allegedly ran over Kolenovic with a Mitsubishi SUV outside a bar on Belmont Avenue in the Fordham section of the Bronx.

The tragic incident occurred after a bar fight between Gashi and two other men spilled outside into the street. Kolenovic, who was not involved in the dispute, was struck by Gashi’s vehicle and launched into a tree, resulting in his untimely death. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Following the incident, Gashi fled the scene and managed to evade law enforcement for the next 18 years. The NYPD had been looking to question him in connection to the death of Kolenovic, but he had disappeared into the Balkans.

However, earlier this year, Gashi was apprehended by Serbian police and subsequently transferred to the custody of the US Marshals. He was brought to Central Booking in the Bronx on Friday night to face charges related to the 2006 murder.

The arrest of Ahmet Gashi brings a sense of closure to the family and friends of Kemal Kolenovic, who was a talented welterweight boxer. The tragic events of that fateful night in 2006 have finally led to justice being served, as Gashi now faces the consequences of his actions.
