Reckless Homicide Charges Approved Nearly Two Years After Fatal Crash

CHICAGO — After a lengthy investigation, prosecutors have given the green light for reckless homicide charges to be filed in connection with a tragic crash that claimed the lives of three individuals on the South Side. The incident, which occurred on February 18, 2023, stemmed from a street takeover that ended in a fiery collision at the intersection of 100th Street and Halsted.

Events Leading Up to the Crash

On the fateful night, a large group of over 100 cars gathered for a sideshow event at 95th and Halsted, characterized by stunt driving and reckless behavior. As law enforcement intervened to disperse the crowd, chaos ensued, with drivers scattering in all directions. Among them was a 2008 Infiniti G35 that ultimately crashed into a utility pole before colliding with a brick wall and igniting in flames.

According to a Chicago police report, the driver of the vehicle, identified as Vicente Rodriguez from Aurora, was apprehended shortly after the crash. Rodriguez, who sustained injuries in the incident, confessed to being behind the wheel at the time of the collision. Tragically, three passengers in the rear seat of the car, Salvador Garcia, Jose Manuel Velazquez, and Joniel Gutierrez, all from Aurora, lost their lives in the fiery wreck.

Legal Proceedings and Charges

Despite the passage of time, Rodriguez, now 20 years old, has only recently been charged with three counts of reckless homicide with a motor vehicle. A warrant for his arrest was issued on December 3, 2024, leading to his detention pending trial. Judge Deidre Dyer presided over the case and ordered Rodriguez to remain in custody as legal proceedings move forward.

As the community mourns the loss of the three young lives and seeks justice for the tragic incident, the legal process will now determine the accountability and consequences for those involved.
