Indian cinema star Tabu takes on a significant role in the “Dune” universe in Max‘s prequel series “Dune: Prophecy,” portraying Sister Francesca in the final two episodes.
Based on “Sisterhood of Dune” by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, the series is set 10,000 years before the events of “Dune” and follows two Harkonnen sisters as they navigate challenges threatening humanity’s future while laying the foundation for the Bene Gesserit order.
Alison Schapker serves as showrunner and executive producer, with Diane Ademu-John co-developing the series and also serving as executive producer. Anna Foerster takes on the role of executive producer and directs multiple episodes.
Tabu, known for her work in international films such as Mira Nair’s “The Namesake” (2006) and “A Suitable Boy” (2020) and Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi” (2012), was approached for the role through a simple process. After reviewing scenes from the script, she participated in a Zoom meeting with the creative team, where they discussed her character’s arc in the final two episodes. Tabu expressed her excitement for the character and the opportunity to be part of the series.
Filmed in Budapest, the project presented several first-time experiences for the actor. Tabu mentioned that it was the first time in her career that she worked with a completely new team in an unfamiliar location.
The character of Sister Francesca exists in two time periods, with Charithra Chandran playing the younger version. Tabu shared that meeting with Chandran helped them both in portraying the character authentically.
Building the character of Sister Francesca required Tabu to be conscious of the world she belonged to while also showcasing her strong personality and individual story. Tabu found the role compelling, especially her interactions with key characters like the Emperor and her son.
The production environment, led by women in key creative positions, left a strong impact on Tabu, making her feel protected and supported throughout the filming process. She also brought a taste of her Indian heritage to the set, sharing Indian food with the cast and crew.
In Bollywood, Tabu recently found success with the film “Crew” and is set to star in the horror-comedy “Bhooth Bangla” next year. Her previous horror-comedy, “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2,” was a major hit in 2022.
Overall, Tabu’s experience working on “Dune: Prophecy” was enriching, allowing her to explore a unique character in a new setting with a talented team. Her portrayal of Sister Francesca adds depth to the “Dune” universe and showcases her versatility as an actor.
