The tension between Panama and the United States has escalated as President Trump threatens to take back control of the Panama Canal unless significant changes are made. This threat has sparked outrage among Panamanians, with dozens of protesters gathering outside the U.S. Embassy in Panama City to voice their opposition.
The protesters chanted slogans such as “Trump, animal, leave the canal alone” and carried signs labeling Trump as the “public enemy of Panama.” Some even went as far as burning flags with his face on them. Saul Mendez, a leader of a construction union, organized the protest and emphasized Panama’s sovereignty over the canal, stating that Trump’s imperial delusions have no place in their country.
The Panama Canal, constructed by the U.S. in 1914, was handed over to Panama in 1999. However, Trump accuses the Panamanian government of exploiting the situation by charging exorbitant fees to American ships passing through the canal and allowing China to expand its influence over its operations. During a rally in Arizona, Trump criticized Panama for imposing “ridiculous” fees on American ships and vowed to put an end to this unfair treatment.
Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino responded to Trump’s threats, affirming that every square meter of the canal belongs to Panama and that the terms of the previous agreement are irreversible. Trump, in turn, defiantly stated, “We’ll see about that!”
The dispute over the Panama Canal highlights the complex relationship between the two countries and the ongoing struggle for control and sovereignty. As tensions continue to rise, it remains to be seen how this conflict will unfold and if a resolution can be reached that satisfies both parties.
